Wondering if you can clean your advertising flag in the washing machine? Learn the difference between washing single sided and double sided flags and how to handwash them properly without damaging the fabric or coating.

Can You Wash a Flag in the Washing Machine?

If you’ve purchased a custom flag or promotional banner from us, keeping it clean is essential for maintaining its vibrant appearance and extending its lifespan. But can you just toss it in the washing machine? The answer depends on what kind of flag you have.

Single Sided Flags – Washing Machine Safe ✅

Single sided polyknit flags (like our popular teardrop flags, feather flags, or custom printed flags) are generally safe to wash in a standard household washing machine.

Washing Tips for Single Sided Flags:

  • Use cold water and a gentle cycle.
  • Avoid bleach or harsh detergents.
  • Do not tumble dry. Instead, hang the flag out to air dry in the shade to prevent fading.

This method works well because single sided flags are made of durable fabric without additional coatings that could be damaged by machine agitation.

Double Sided Flags – Handwash Only ⚠️

Double sided flags are different. These flags are made with blockout layers or silver-backed coating between two layers of fabric to prevent light show-through and enhance print clarity on both sides.

Putting double sided flags into a washing machine is not recommended, as the spinning and detergent can damage the internal coating and reduce the effectiveness of the blockout layer.

How to Handwash a Double Sided Flag Properly

To clean your double sided flag without damaging it, follow these gentle steps:

  1. Fill a large tub or sink with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can weaken adhesives or coatings.
  2. Add a small amount of mild detergent – a gentle handwash liquid is ideal. Do not use bleach or strong stain removers.
  3. Submerge the flag fully in the water and let it soak for about 5–10 minutes.
  4. Gently swish the flag back and forth with your hands. Do not scrub or rub the surface, especially where the blockout or silver coating is located.
  5. Drain the soapy water and rinse the flag thoroughly with clean water until no detergent remains.
  6. Lift the flag carefully – do not wring it. Instead, press it gently between your hands or against the side of the tub to release excess water.
  7. Hang the flag in the shade to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight to preserve print colours and prevent cracking or peeling.
