Flag Bases for Teardrop & Feather Flags NZ – 7 Options

Start with the surface and setup. Grass or soft ground usually means a ground spike. Concrete or hard ground usually means a 10kg or 20kg steel plate, or a water tank. If you have a fixed wall or fence, a wall mount can be the better long-term solution. Cross bases and car wheel bases are mainly for specific event or vehicle-based use.

Ground Spike – Best for Grass and Soft Ground

If you have suitable grass, soil or other firm soft ground, a ground spike flag base is normally the best option. It is simple, economical, easy to carry and remains our first recommendation whenever customers have usable soft ground.

10kg Steel Plate – Our Most Common Choice for Hard Surfaces

For concrete, paving, shop fronts and most regular hard-surface use, the 10kg steel plate flag base is what we recommend most often. It has a clean appearance, works well indoors or outdoors, and needs very little maintenance because there is nothing to fill, drain or leak.

For windier locations, additional suitable weight such as a concrete slab can be placed on top of the steel plate if required.

Water Tank – Useful for Windier Open Areas

The water tank is another practical base for concrete and other hard surfaces. It weighs around 14kg when filled with water and around 18kg when filled with sand or stones. It is easy to transport while empty and can provide useful ballast once filled, so we often suggest it for windier open areas.

Its main disadvantage is durability in rough or high-traffic locations. Repeatedly dragging a filled tank over coarse footpaths can damage it and cause leaking, and accidental damage is more likely in busy public areas. For this reason, we generally recommend the 10kg steel plate more often for daily use. Water tanks are also less commonly chosen for indoor displays.

20kg Steel Plate – More Solid Ballast on Hard Surfaces

The 20kg steel plate flag base is made from two laser-cut 10kg steel plates. Choose it when you want more solid ballast than the standard 10kg option. The trade-off is portability, as it is considerably heavier to move.

Wall / Fence Mount – Best for a Fixed Installation

If you have a suitable fixed position, the wall / fence mount flag base can be the most convenient long-term option. It raises the flag higher for better visibility from a distance and means you only need to bring the flag and pole inside each day rather than carrying a heavy base as well.

This is particularly useful around warehouses, industrial sites and unattended areas where leaving a portable base outside may not be practical. Our wall mount provides 90° and 60° angles from the ground. When mounting to a solid wall, use the 60° position where appropriate to keep the flag farther away from the wall and reduce contact between the flag head and the building.

Cross Base + Water Bag – Trade Shows, Events and Indoor Use

The cross base + water bag is a popular event base because it is economical, folds for transport and is easy to carry. It is especially suitable for trade shows, exhibition halls, malls and temporary indoor displays.

Car Wheel Base – Vehicle-Based Displays

The car wheel flag base is designed for situations where a stationary vehicle can provide the ballast. It is useful for real estate open homes, car yards and some outdoor promotional events. Always remove the base before moving the vehicle.

All seven bases on this page use the same 14.2 mm spindle size, so they are interchangeable with our compatible flag poles. This means the same teardrop, feather or rectangle flag pole can use different bases depending on the location—for example, a ground spike on grass and a steel plate on concrete.

Use each flag base only on a suitable surface and make sure the spindle and pole are correctly assembled before use. For steel plates, follow our steel plate flag base installation guide. For water tanks, position the base before filling it and avoid dragging a filled tank over rough ground.

No portable flag base is storm-proof. Extra ballast improves stability, but wind load also depends on the flag size, shape and exposure of the site. Take advertising flags down in strong winds and severe weather.
